Hello, I'm Gemma!
Founder of Rhubarb & Twist, an independent graphic design studio based in Pontefract, Yorkshire.
I’ve worked in graphic design for more than 20 years, working for advertising agencies, the public sector, local authorities and charities throughout the UK. I’ve worked on all sorts of projects, for all sorts of people, and that experience has taught me that good design isn’t just about making something look nice. It’s about understanding people, solving problems and making sure the right message gets through.
Being a small studio means we work differently. No layers of account management. No endless handovers. No complicated process for the sake of it. Just direct collaboration, honest conversations, and thoughtful creative work shaped around what you actually need.
Our name is rooted in home. Wakefield is famous for its rhubarb, while Pontefract is known for its liquorice and the classic liquorice twist. Together they inspired a name that’s proudly local, full of character, and a little unexpected.
That same spirit runs through everything we do.
We’re curious by nature and thoughtful in our approach. Strategic without disappearing into jargon. We look for the ideas that make brands more memorable, more useful, and more human.
The rhubarb is our roots. The twist is how we think.
